Dhanteras or Dhana Trayodashi, practically the beginning of the five day Diwali celebrations, arguably the most popular festival of India. On this festive season the gift giving starts on from the first day itself i.e. on Dhanteras. It’s on 27th October, 2016 on a Thursday. The name itself symbolises celebration of wealth & prosperity- ‘Dhan’ means wealth & ‘Teras’ means the date 13th.
There are many legends behind the celebrations of Dhanteras. But the most popular one goes like this – A 16-year-old son of a certain King Hima was to be married. But his horoscope predicted his death from a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. So on that fateful day, his newly-wedded wife did not allow him to go to sleep. She laid out all her ornaments and jewellery in a heap at the entrance of their bedroom chamber and lit the whole place with lamps. Then she kept narrating stories and sang songs to keep her husband awake. When the God of Death, Lord Yama arrived at the prince’s doorstep as a serpent, his eyes were dazzled and blinded by the brilliance of all the lights from the lamps reflecting on the jewellery. So Lord Yama could not enter the Prince’s chamber & climbed up on to the top of the heap of gold and sat there the entire night listening to the stories and songs. In the next morning, he silently slipped away. Thus, the young prince was saved from the clutches of death by the wits of his new bride, and the day came to be celebrated as Dhanteras.
