Are you thinking of using artificial flowers for your wedding? If you are debating whether artificial flowers or live flowers would be best for your special event, this article will answer many of your questions.

Many people think that artificial flowers are tacky and do not feel they should be a part of any event or wedding. Truth is, depending on the quality of the flowers chosen and the type of arrangement, some fake flowers can look classier than others. Of course, nothing can beat the real thing. The perfumed aroma, the stunning beauty, the nostalgia associated with real flowers, the vibrancy and the uniqueness of fresh flowers will always surpass artificial flowers.

If you are intent on using artificial flowers for your wedding, take your time when you go shopping to find the right flowers that match your color scheme and preferences. Look for the most realistic looking silk flowers. Color tone is also very important. we’ve seen weddings where the bridal parties’ fresh flowers were beautiful dark red roses that blended with cream roses accented by dainty baby’s breath and feathery greens. At this same wedding’s reception, the centerpieces were made with obviously artificial flowers. They looked plastic and tacky. What made it worse was the fire engine red color which clashed with the deep red of the live flowers, the clumpy baby’s breath and the faded plastic green leaves. What a nightmare from a florist`s point of view!  When choosing realistic looking flowers, do make sure they are soft and look authentic.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Artificial Flowers

As a general rule, cheap artificial flowers are usually less expensive than fresh flowers especially if you seek exotic or tropical flowers. Sometimes though, you are able to find amazing deals on fresh flowers, especially if you buy them wholesale online. With artificial flowers, you can make your bouquets as far in advance as you are comfortable with and this is a great comfort to some brides. On the other hand, making your own flowers either alone, with close friends, bridesmaids or with family can be greatly rewarding. Imagine the memories created and the sense of pride at knowing that you and your loved ones collaborated in creating beautiful bouquets that will live on forever in the pictures and in the memories. Of course, you could just buy pre-made fresh floral bridal bouquets and skip the hassle of making your own. Fresh flowers could never be surpassed in beauty and uniqueness.

4 Rules for Combining Fresh with Artificial Wedding Flowers

1) Choose the prettiest, most realistic looking flowers for both silks and fresh flowers.

2) Do not mix fresh flowers with silk flowers within the wedding bouquets and body flowers. If your bouquets are real, your body flowers (corsages & boutonnieres) should be real and vice versa. Some exceptions include flowers for little ones. Flower girls and ring bearers flowers can be silk. Since kids tend to be a little rough, artificial flowers stand a much better chance of surviving the little one’s happy day. The throwaway bouquet is the other exception to the rule. Since this bouquet must withstand very trying conditions, silk flowers are quite acceptable for this traditional floral item.

3) Many brides choose fresh flowers for their wedding bouquets and body flowers but prefer having silk flowers for their centerpieces. If done in a tasteful and classic way, this can work out fine. For optimal elegance, choose your flowers well. They must be the exact same shades, especially if going with red.

4) Do not mix fresh and artificial flowers within the same arrangement. For example, if you are floating a red rose in a rose bowl as a centerpiece, don’t use silk flower accents in the same arrangement.

In conclusion, the number one reason I’ve heard as a bridal florist for brides choosing artificial bouquets is that they can be great keepsake souvenirs long after the wedding.  Of course, other brides don`t want any other dust collectors laying around their house. The number one reason brides choose fresh flowers is for the traditional luxury of fresh flowers on their most special occasion. Your fresh flowers will live on forever through the pictures and videos on your wedding day. Only you can decide which is best for you: artificial flowers or live flowers. If you decide on fresh flowers, you can always order online from online florists with just a few clicks.
